The Famous “Marudi Kway Teow” in Miri

This is the place you go for “Marudi style” Kway Teow in Miri.

If you were to ask someone what their idea of a good breakfast in Miri is, you’d be hard pressed to find a collective singular answer. With the amount of variety and history and Miri has to offer, the options for breakfast are wide and limited only by how far you’d be willing to travel to try it. Having said that, there is one place to fulfill your cravings that I think you absolutely must try if you’re a lover of fried noodles – “Wang Li Xiang’s Marudi Kway Teow” located at Ah Seng Food Centre!

Step inside the food centre and you’ll see quite a few stalls portraying the typical breakfast scene in Miri. Take a look to your left and you’ll see the aforementioned stall with our friendly uncle tossing his homemade kway teow into his wok, preparing dishes for his customers.

He offers only a few simple dishes.

Once you’ve sat down, you’ll be presented with a simple menu that consists of pretty much 3 dishes, namely the Marudi kway teow, fried noodles, and fried bee hoon. You could also ask them for a fried egg as an extra which I would personally recommend!

This uncle who calls himself “Uncle Marudi” whips up some of the most incredible food I’ve had the pleasure of eating, and he cooks them from start to finish quite quickly too! From order to plate, he’d take probably less than 5 minutes for a dish to be fully prepared and served. That’s not to say that he doesn’t put care into his food – because the way the food tastes evidently proves this otherwise.

His Marudi kway teow has a distinct, soft texture with a deep charcoal like taste that is quintessentially what kueh tiao should be owing to the fact that he makes his own kway teow at home, instead of store buying it.

What really finishes the dish well is the “telur mata” topped onto it. Pair some of the egg yolk with the noodles or kway teow, and the married flavors just feel like they were made for each other.

What makes this good isn’t any complex flavors, but that it more resembles something that is simple and tasty, and I would argue that this is what any person would want to have for breakfast.

My personal favourite would be his fried noodles that has a recognizably different taste compared to the kway teow, being more intense and its texture being somewhat more chewy and robust.

Having said that, one should try both as it ultimately goes down to personal preference as to which is better!

Uncle Marudi’s Background.

I managed to sneak a few questions to uncle Marudi when he was less busy, asking him a bit more about the stall. He mentioned that the stall has been opened for about 3 years, but he’s been cooking since 10 years ago. His wife and him are originally from Marudi, and he used to work in the oil and gas sector. He changed professions to this instead because there weren’t as many opportunities in the sector then, but he’s been happy since.

His stall opens everyday from 6am to 2pm, however is closed on Tuesday every 2 weeks. I would highly recommend anyone to come here for breakfast or lunch if you’re looking for some good fried kway teow or noodles.
