Since 1938: Famous Curry Rice at Miri Open Air Market

Hey foodies! Have you ever heard of the famous Hainanese Curry Rice that can be found in Miri Open Air Market? The little stall called Ah Sheng’s Curry Rice has been one of the locals’ favourite places to eat in Miri. This is because of their plate of nostalgic tasting curry rice which may bring you back to memory lane.

This stall, being handled by some lovely elderly folks, has been selling curry rice since 1938, that’s a total of 82 years. Truly amazing! The business was passed down to the current food vendor by her late father and has been selling this food since then.

The curry rice includes a generous amount of sliced up char siew pork, steamed chicken, and to top it all off, a slather of their curry gravy. This plate of messy goodness is divine to savour on any day! The steamed chicken tasted rather smooth and tender, whereby the meat just falls off the bones pretty easily. Meanwhile, the beautifully marinated pork was sweet enough for my liking, definitely nothing overpowering at all.

Their curry gravy has a light consistency, being slightly seasoned and not spicy whatsoever. Overall, still delightful and palatable to the taste buds. Very much of an old-school curry rice whereby so much love and care was put into making this dish by the food vendor. It just warmth my heart thinking about it.

Our plates of curry rice were served along with a bowl of curry gravy and clear soups on the side. Surely, a meal that would leave you feeling satisfied and worth every single penny of yours. Highly recommend pairing this meal with a cup of hot coffee from Stall No.35! Their coffee beans are very aromatic and have robust flavours, something worth trying out here to perk up your day!

The Uncles and Aunties who are regular customers to this curry rice stall have been eating here since their younger days, and now they are even bringing their younger generation along with them to endeavour this legendary place.

The place is usually crowded during the weekends, especially around 11 am on a Saturday morning. Just a friendly reminder to our fellow foodies, the food vendors here are elderlies, so please be patient with them while waiting for your food and don’t ever rush your orders to avoid any unpleasant experience. Hope you can be understanding <3
