Sin Lian Shin: The Legendary Kolo Mee Shop in Kuching

Ni hao foodies! In this entry, we’re gonna be talking about one of the best Kolo Mee in Cat City. This shop would get swamped with locals, be it workers or students as soon as they open at 6am. So, let’s find out, is it really one of the best in Kuching?

Located by the roadside at Jalan Green, near the Green Road schools, it’s pretty easy to spot them. But the downside is, parking could be a little hard to find since it’s limited.

About Sin Lian Shin

This shop has been here for quite a while. Roughly more than 5 decades and still serving their legendary Kolo Mee until today. Because it is located near schools, this place is a really popular breakfast spot for students and their parents before school starts.

We wanted to talk to the owner and ask more about the place but weren’t able to, because they were crazy packed and busy. Since they are also available on Grab Food, the number of orders in Grab were also overwhelming. Anyway, if you’re wondering if a legendary shop like this accepts online payment, yes they do! You can pay using Sarawak Pay and also QR Code, and of course cash ya.

As usual when you go to a Kolo Mee place, you can order the usual Kolo Mee or Kolo Mee Merah. First, we had the basic Kolo Mee with “mee lurus” as they call it. As suggested by my cousin and friends, the Kolo Mee here is best enjoyed with “mee lurus”. Oh my, I did not regret listening to their suggestion. Actually, I didn’t know “mee lurus” existed. I just thought they were all the same. Please forgive me! But you know what they say, you learn something new everyday am I right? The Kolo Mee was yummy for me but a friend of mine said it’s slightly salty. I guess it’s all down to preference. Oh no, I hope you guys don’t think I think everything is yummy. *jokes* It was honestly to my liking!

*shrieks!* I friggin love Mee Merah. If you’ve been following my writings so far, you’ll know I love Kolo Mee Merah. The Kolo Mee Merah at Sin Lian Shin did not disappoint. It was slightly wet for a Kolo Mee though. But I didn’t mind that cause I kinda like my Kolo Mee Merah to be a little wet. I ordered a big bowl of it! You can order small or big ya. So, if you feel like small is not enough, get the big bowl! You will not regret it.

Here’s a picture comparison of the two different sizes of serving for your reference!

Overall Experience at Sin Lian Shin

I loved everything that I had there. Although we actually had to wait around more than 20 minutes, the noodles were satisfying. Also, we kinda know what to expect since mostly locals said it will take a while. They will also notify you that it will take a while to prepare. Other than that, their waiter was nice enough to follow up with our order when it was more than 10 minutes already. If you do pay a visit to this place, bear in mind that they will always be packed ya. Overall, it was a great experience for me. I know why even after more than decades, they are still open and serving the locals.
